Engagement Coordinator Position Description

Shirley Heinze Land Trust (SHLT) protects and manages 4,000 acres in Lake, Porter, LaPorte, St. Joseph, Marshall, and Starke Counties in  northwestern Indiana and engages communities in conservation and nature. The Engagement Coordinator (EC) is responsible for developing and implementing dynamic, inclusive public programming and volunteer events. This position reports directly to the Deputy Director, and collaborates with staff, volunteers, and community partners to achieve organizational engagement and outreach goals. This is a full-time hourly position with a range of $18-$20/hr based in accordance with candidate experience and expertise. This position includes a competitive benefits package.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Develop and coordinate all public programming including leading, scheduling, securing presenters, and acting as the primary contact to ensure quality program delivery for families, adults, youth groups, and community organizations to be delivered at SHLT preserves and other venues.
• Actively seek and build relationships with community partners, content experts, service clubs, schools and universities, and others to support community engagement.
• Attend and table at community events and presentations.
• Support the recruitment of volunteers for events and workdays including Volunteer Naturalists.
• Work with Programs Committee chair to support committee needs including drafting the agenda, taking minutes, and reporting on programming.
• Support the promotion of education, volunteer, and outreach events and programs with timely scheduling and sharing of event logistics to marketing team.
• Track, maintain, and report accurate engagement data with timely database entry.
• Assist with securing, administering, and reporting for grant funding.
• Solicit sponsorships and in-kind donations for engagement events.
• Assist with other projects, as needed.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences, Biology, Education, Interpretation or Environmental Science or related field.
• Professional experience demonstrating education/outreach program development and delivery, interpretive techniques and a knowledge of audience learning styles.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
• A flexible and adaptable style that can positively impact both strategic and tactical organizational growth.
• Team player; ability to work independently without close oversight.
• Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
• Experience using Microsoft Office 365, Google Workspace, database, remote meeting platforms (Teams, Zoom), and design tools (Canva, Adobe).
• Physical ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and hike several miles.
• Valid driver’s license.
 

Work Location and Environment:

SHLT offices are located at Meadowbrook Nature Preserve (109 W 700 North, Valparaiso, IN 46385). This position is in-person with some weekend and evening work required.
