Portage, IN – November 8, 2024 – The Portage Township YMCA is excited to announce a transformative partnership with NorthShore Health Centers, made possible through a generous grant from First Things First Porter County. This collaboration aims to offer prenatal memberships to expectant parents in our community, providing vital support and resources as they embark on the incredible journey of parenthood.

"As expectant parents prepare for their baby, creating a strong foundation becomes a priority," said Brianna Manning, Fund Development Director. "By emphasizing physical health, mental well-being, and community support, we can foster a healthy home environment for the child. The YMCA and NorthShore Health Centers will work hand in hand to support these parents and their families alike."

The YMCA’s mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. With this partnership, we will provide essential services tailored to the needs of expectant families. Offerings will include prenatal yoga, healthy eating classes, group exercise sessions, community cafes, and more, all designed to create a sense of belonging and community.

Research shows that families facing financial instability and limited resources often struggle with additional stressors that can impact child welfare. By offering support programs, educational

opportunities, and parent meet-ups, we aim to mitigate these challenges and promote healthier, more stable environments for children and their parents.

Starting in November 2024, vouchers for the prenatal membership will be distributed to eligible families, continuing through Fall 2025. The YMCA is committed to exploring additional funding sources to ensure the longevity of this vital program. Activities, branded as "Firm Foundations and Healthy Beginnings," will include a variety of monthly and weekly events, allowing families to engage at their own pace.

"We believe that a strong foundation not only provides hope for children but also relief for parents," added Manning. "When parents become involved with the YMCA before the birth of their children, they will already have found a place to connect, a routine to focus on their health, and a community of people navigating similar phases of life."
