Valparaiso, IN – While weight-loss medications have gained attention in recent years while bariatric surgery continues to be a proven option for long-term health. Yet many patients don’t realize this life-saving procedure can work in tandem with GLP-1 medications.

Andrew Martin, M.D., a bariatric and general surgeon with Northwest Health, will hold a free seminar that will explore weight loss surgery options, compare bariatric surgery with GLP-1 medications and how both approaches may complement each other.

The community event, “Bariatric Surgery & Long-Term Health: What You Need to Know in the GLP-1 Era,” will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, at Northwest Health – Porter, Community Room, 85 E. U.S. Highway 6, Valparaiso.

The seminar will also explore:

  • How bariatric surgery works and whether it’s right for you
  • The health benefits beyond weight loss and how bariatric surgery can resolve many medical conditions and concerns
  • Life after surgery, including recovery timelines, lifestyle changes and success strategies

“Today’s bariatric surgery is different from what many people imagine,” Dr. Martin said. “Modern surgical options are safer and more precise; and offers total-body health benefits that go well beyond weight loss.”
