Portage, IN – Family Promise of Porter County’s annual Nelson’s Chicken Fundraising Event is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Willowcreek Middle School (5962 Central Avenue, Portage, IN) from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, or until sold out.
“People have already begun calling and asking when this event is coming back,” said Jason Kegebein, Executive Director of Family Promise of Porter County. “It’s become a community favorite—the best port-a-pit chicken and potato dinner around!”
Guests can enjoy mouth-watering, pit-smoked barbecue with half chickens for $10.00 each, or upgrade to a full meal with pit potatoes for $15.00. Bottled water, desserts, and other items will also be available for purchase.
To guarantee a meal before they sell out, community members are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance. Presale tickets are available at the Portage Township Resource Center (3484 Airport Road, Portage, IN 46368) or through local volunteers throughout the Portage area. Building Hope: Supporting a New Family Shelter
This year’s fundraiser carries even greater significance as proceeds will directly support Family Promise of Porter County’s efforts to open a new 3,000 square foot family shelter in Portage. This expanded space will allow the organization to serve more families with children who are experiencing homelessness, providing not just shelter, but stability, case management, and a pathway toward sustainable independence.
“With the growing need in our community, this new shelter will be a game-changer,” Kegebein added. “Every chicken sold helps us move one step closer to opening our doors and welcoming families into a safe, supportive environment where they can rebuild their lives.”
