Memorial Opera House to Present Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, May 8–24
Memorial Opera House proudly presents Stephen Sondheim’s beloved musical A Little Night Music, running May 8–24. Widely regarded as one of the most elegant and emotionally rich works in musical theatre, this Tony Award-winning masterpiece continues to enchant audiences with its wit, romance, and unforgettable score.
Inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s film Smiles of a Summer Night, the musical premiered on Broadway in 1973 and quickly became one of Sondheim’s most celebrated achievements. Set in turn-of-the-century Sweden during the lingering glow of midsummer, A Little Night Music explores the complexities of love, longing, and second chances with warmth, humor, and surprising candor.
Featuring a lush score composed almost entirely in waltz time—including the iconic standard “Send in the Clowns”—Sondheim’s music carries audiences through a weekend at a country estate where former lovers reunite, new attractions spark, and relationships are tested in unexpectedly delicious ways. Equal parts romantic, witty, and just a little scandalous, the story unfolds with elegance and emotional depth that feels as timeless as ever.
“A Little Night Music is a show that has been on our radar for years,” says Director and Memorial Opera House Venue Director Scot MacDonald. “With audiences embracing lush period romances like Bridgerton, The Gilded Age, and Downton Abbey, the timing felt perfect. Being able to assemble a cast of incredibly talented musicians and actors makes this production a true treat for both longtime fans of the show and those discovering it for the first time.”
Since its Broadway debut, A Little Night Music has received numerous accolades, including six Tony Awards, and has been praised by critics as “a near-perfect musical comedy” and “a masterclass in sophisticated storytelling.”
