Portage, IN – The Recycling & Waste Reduction District of Porter County will host the fifth household hazardous waste collection event on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at Portage High School located at 6450 U.S. Hwy 6, Portage, IN. The event will take place from 9am to 2pm CST.
Participants are asked to enter the event from Pan Am Boulevard.
Residents can dispose of products containing corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive substances. Common household hazardous waste items include aerosol cans, anti-freeze, oil, batteries (household & automotive), oil based paints, solvents, paint thinners, pesticides, pool chemicals, diesel fuel, kerosene, household smoke detectors, and flammable liquids.
At the collection participants can drop off medical sharps including diabetic needles, blood lancets, insulin pens, epi-pens, syringes, expired over the counter medicines and non-narcotic prescriptions.
In addition to household hazardous waste items, residents can dispose of clean and dry plastic bags, plastic film wraps, grocery bags and plastic wrapping. Water softener bags will not be accepted for recycling.
The event will feature a free gas can exchange. Porter County residents can exchange old gas cans for eco-friendly 2.5 gallon gas cans. Supplies are limited. Gas cans will be distributed on a first come first serve basis.
Items NOT accepted at this event include electronics, latex paint, tires, grill propane cylinders, and large containers over 55 gallons in size. Visit www.PorterCountyRecycling.org for a complete list of accepted items.
For those unable to participate on August 13, 2022 the sixth and final household hazardous waste collection event for the season is scheduled for Saturday, October 8, 2022 at the Porter County Expo Center located at 215 E. Division Road, Valparaiso, IN. The event will take place from 9am to 2pm CST.
